Winter Hair Trim

I have no clue what the length of my hair is, but it is growing. I did a light press for a much needed trim.  I prefer pressing over a flat ironing because it straightens my ends.  My ends looked good, but I took off about an inch anyway.  I do at least two trims a year (winter, summer), but I think it’s time for a professional cut and shaping.  I use Motions Heat Seeker Protectant Spray and Beija-Flor Licorice Root Elixir for scalp and hair after pressing.  This oil made my hair silky smooth and is perfect for ends protection.

This is my hair the next morning.  Reversion is quick for me which is why I don’t bother straightening.  Add the nightly hot flashes to the mix and the so called light press is over.  I’ll just braid the rest of the week, then wash on Sunday, if I can wait that long.  What I get is equivalent to a stretched braid out.

Heads Up: Vitamin D Deficiency

Do you experience muscle soreness or cramps?  Unexplained hip and bone pain?  Midday fatigue?  I brushed these symptoms off and contributed them to my growing list of perimenopausal symptoms.   General physician ordered routine blood tests which came back normal.  I wasn’t completely satisfied with the results because these symptoms somehow felt different which warranted an appointment with my endocrinologist (hormone doc).   She ordered a vitamin D blood test which revealed a very low vitamin D level.  For 12 weeks, I’m to take vitamin D and calcium daily.   After a month, I do have more energy and need a midday nap less often.  I also have decreased muscle soreness.

Vitamin D helps our bodies maintain adequate levels of calcium and phosphorus which in turn helps us to build strong bones and teeth.  Low levels of vitamin D causes the body to pull calcium and phosphorus from where we need it most; our bones.   Osteomalacia (muscle weakness) and rickets (skeletal deformities)  are two diseases caused by vitamin D deficiency.   Vitamin D deficiency has also been associated with increased cardiovascular risks (hypertension, heart attack, stroke), as well as other health problems.

Dietary sources of vitamin D:

  • Fatty fish high in omega-3s (salmon, tuna, trout, sardines, and mackerel).
  • Cod liver oil
  • Eggs
  • Whole/fortified milk
  • Sunlight (at least ten minutes of sun exposure).  Note:  People with darker skin (melanin) are more likely to produce less vitamin D from the sun.

Check out the following links for further info regarding vitamin D:  Women To Women (menopause), WebMD (Vitamin D), WebMD (informative slideshow about hair).

For those experiencing menopause/perimenopause, ask your doc to check your vitamin D levels during your routine checkup this year.

Product Review: Beija Flor Naturals

I hate to do this to the product junkies so close to Christmas, but there is a new kinky curly hair product you gotta try.   Beija Flor Naturals’ Creme Brulee for Kinks, Curls, and Coils is truly one of the best curl products I’ve used this year.

Beija Flor Naturals is a natural products company based out of California.   Their vegan/organic body care line includes products for the hair, face, and body.   Beija Flor Naturals can also be found in the directory, which is a  cool directory of ecofriendly companies.   Their products are available for purchase at  Beija Flor, as well as on Etsy at Beija Flor Naturals.

PRODUCT   Creme Brulee for Kinks, Curls, and Coils, 8 oz., $12.95.   This is an everyday leave-in moisturizer.  In total, an infusion of 13 premium natural ingredients create a light cream texture that is perfect for all natural hair types.

APPLICATION:  After co-washing my hair with Taliah Waajid Herb Enhancing Conditioner, I squeezed out excess water.  I then applied the Licorice Root Scalp Elixir to scalp with fingers and massaged in.   Next, I parted my damp hair in four sections (parted down the middle and from side to side).  I applied a finger full of Creme Brulee for Kinks, Curls, and Coils to each section, from root to tip, concentrating on my ends.  I instantly felt the product smoothing my hair strands.  The Creme Brulee has a light whipped, creamy texture and a yummy, light cinnamon/nutmeg spice smell which dissipates after application.

RESULTS:  The Creme Brulee for Kinks, Curls, and Coils  absorbed instantly in my hair, smoothing my coily strands from root to tip.   Even my fuzzy hairline behaved.  After applying product to each section, I put my hair in a ponytail to airdry.   No other product was necessary.

What I like about this product:

  • A standalone product.  No other product necessary.
  • My hair was frizz free, soft, and defined.
  • The Creme Brulee is nongreasy and doesn’t weigh down hair.   I had plenty of bounce and movement.

VERDICT:   The perfect curly hair product for me because I didn’t need any other products with it.  Will definitely order more.

Other products I tried:

Hemp Buttercream, 8 oz., $12.00, 98% natural.  A daily hair and body moisturizer that is concentrated, fast absorbing and lasts all day.

RESULTS:  I have mild eczema and I purchased unscented Hemp Buttercream.  It’s a great hair moisturizer, but an even better body butter.  I used this product for bunning which works best when applied to wet hair.    I slather this on after a shower and my skin stays moisturized and flake-free all day.

Licorice Root Scalp Elixir, $13.00.   This product is made to combat dry, itchy, irritated scalp, reduce dandruff, stop hair loss and promote healthy hair growth.

RESULTS:  This oil feels good on your scalp and soothes the itchies.  The Licorice Root Scalp Elixir is also a great product for sealing ends.

Organic Whipped Shea Butter, 4 oz., $10.00.  Our shea butter is whipped with nourishing oils such as coconut, and apricot oils for a creamy spreadable texture.

RESULTS:  This whipped shea butter is a great face, hair  AND body moisturizer.  I love the light texture of this butter and it keeps skin hydrated all day.

Please stop by and check out Beija Flor Naturals.  Natural and organic goodies such as facial products, soaps, oils, and scrubs are available.

Earring Obsession and Aku’s Ear Ornaments

I wouldn’t call myself a product junky so much anymore, but when it comes to earrings, I’m aware I have a problem.   My obsession for earrings goes waaaaaaaaaay back.  Here is a little evidence and this is only half of them.

Of course, Etsy never lets me down when it comes to feeding my earring obsession.   I recently purchased these gorgeous babies from Kezzmit on Etsy.  I’m always excited when I receive email that Aku, the owner of Kezzmit, has Flickr updates.  Her unique colors and earring designs are amazing.  Can you believe they’re created out of lightweight paper clay?  Don’t believe me?  See for yourself.  Here are some of my favorites.  Click on the earring links for more details.

Add Hats, Headbands, Scarves to Winter Protective Styling Regimen

Baby, it’s getting cold outside and it’s time for a little extra protection for those protective styles.  For me, there is no such thing as a bad hair day in the winter.  I have too many hats for that.  Fly, stylish winter headgear/accessories can be found everywhere.   I love, love, love hats, especially rasta, slouchy hats because they’re roomy enough to cover all of my hair.   For one-of-a-kind, unique, handcrafted to your specification type of headgear/accessories, go to  In my search, I stumbled across the Uber Headband from Angel’s Purple Pantry.   The Uber Headband had me excited and drooling for more.   A visit to Angel’s Purple Pantry revealed awesome winter headgear/accessories such as hats, scarves, scarflettes, etc.  Some items wre unisex as well.   These accessories would make perfect Christmas gifts, especially for a kinky curly girl.

Cowls or loop scarves are also popular right now, but you can also use a large scarf  (tie ends together) or a wrap to cover head and neck.  These were found at J.C.

My favorite hit-em-up winter headgear/accessories store at the moment is Burlington Coat Factory.  Their inventory is ridiculous as well as affordable.  Since winter headgear/accessories are also popular Christmas gifts, most big chain  stores (Sears, Kohl’s, Target, etc.) also have a large inventory.   Get extra protection for those kinks and coils.  Add hats, headbands and scarves to your winter protective styling regimen.

Protective Styling with Taliah Waajid Products

I am really loving the Taliah Waajid products.  The Taliah Waajid Lock It Up gel is really helping to add moisture for protective styling (buns and twists).  I use it alone when I want to add hold to twists or a twist out.  When bunning, I add 1 teaspoon each of the Taliah Waajid African Healing Oyl and castor oil to half a jar (3 oz.) of the Lock It Up gel.  This mixture provides light hold, shine, moisture, and softness to my hair.

I co-washed with Taliah Waajid Herbal Enhancing conditioner, then applied my shea butter mix to damp hair.  I then sealed hair with the Lock It Up gel mixture before bunning.

**NOTE:  For the naturals with fine hair seeking  products that help to thicken hair, especially mature naturals, amla powder is the truth.  These are my chunky twists I put in at bedtime in-between protective styling.  Amla has definitely helped to thicken my hair.  I purchase my amla from AyurNatural Beauty.  Great prices and fast shipping.
