Product Review: Donna Marie Coco Curly Butter

donnamarieccbPRODUCT:  Donna Marie Coco Curly Butter, Curl Enchancing Cream, 8 oz., $12.00.

PURCHASED ATBeauty By Donna Marie website.

APPLICATION:  After shampoooing with Cristophe Clarifying shampoo, I then conditioned with Cristophe’s clarifying conditioner, rinsed, leaving a little in.  The Donna Marie Coco Curly Butter has a light tropical scent, which I love.  I applied a dab of the Donna Marie Coco Curly butter in sections, but didn’t comb through.  My hair is 4a/b and fine.  Combing my hair causes frizz.

RESULTS:  I bought this product because I need a styler that does not weigh down my fine hair.  Although this product is a curl enhancer, my hair is very coily/curly naturally.  My hair loves aloe vera which is high in the ingredient list for this product.  I got perfect shiny spirals which were soft, frizz free with a light hold I can deal with.  No crunch.  Some curls were clumped together where I had to separate them, but I think it was because I used too much product in some areas.  I also should have shook my hair more throughout the air drying process to separate the curls better.  Another plus is that it dries fast.  Next time I may try combing the product through to see what results I’d achieve.

VERDICT:  I really like this product.   I have yet to commit to an online product, but I think if I keep having consistent results with Donna Marie Coco Curly Butter, this may be the one.  This would be the perfect summer product because it is a light styler, but I’m afraid using Donna Marie Coco Curly Butter alone in this cold Michigan weather would cause some breakage and/or split ends.  For the winter weather, I am going to need a leave-in with this.  I’m going to purchase the Donna Marie’s Ultimate Detangler, which is also a leave-in, and see how it works.  With the holidays coming up, though, it’s the perfect styler.    Definitely would purchase product again.

ALTERNATE USE:  I mixed a tablespoon of the Coco Curly Butter with some shea butter and olive oil for my bun.  Wow!  It slicked back easily and my hair, especially the ends, stayed moisturized very well.  I am very pleased with this product.  (Will post pics of my bun).

Product Review: Jane Carter Nourish and Shine

PRODUCT:  Jane Carter Nourish and Shine, 4 oz.

PURCHASED AT:  Vitamin Shoppe, 4 oz., sale $17.99 (Reg. price $22.00 at Jane Carter Solution website).

APPLICATION:  After conditioner washing with V05 Sun-Ripened Raspberry conditioner, I rinsed then squeezed out excess water which left my hair damp.  The Nourish and Shine has a slight gritty texture (almost like shea butter that has been overheated), which easily melted by rubbing my hands together.  I applied product from front to back, all the way to ends (like I’m gathering my hair in a ponytail).  I shook my head a couple of times to separate coils and air dried.

RESULTS:  My hair had mad shine and shrinkage was minimal.  There was no frizz and each coil was separate and perfectly defined.  Guess what that meant?  No tangly ends.  Woo hoo!

VERDICT:  After six years, I think I’ve finally found my Holy Grail.  I don’t think I’ve ever said that about any product.  Ever.  The fact that Nourish and Shine is natural and can be purchased locally (Vitamin Shoppe) at a reduced price makes it an even better deal for me.

Check out the Vitamin Shoppe for other current Jane Carter Solution deals.  Moisture Nourishing Shampoo, $5.99, Nutrient Replenishing Conditioner, $9.99, Revitalizing Leave-In Conditioner, $6.99.

Six Years of Learning To Love My Hair

Can I say that today I love my hair?  My choice to wear my hair natural stemmed from health-related issues I had six years ago (big chop August 10, 2002).  Looking back, though, I don’t think I would have ever made it this far without the information, insight, and encouragment from some of Nappturality’s veterans that were active members at the time.   Don’t see them too much on the boards anymore, but it’s impossible to speak of my hair journey without mentioning the impact they had on it.  Thanks ladies!

My advice to those who are on or just starting their natural journey:

  1. Be Informed.  Search hair care info on the internet, buy books, go to the library or join hair care forums/boards.  A lot of board members have their own blogs and sites documenting their hair journey.
  2. Be Patient.  There is a lot to learn.  You’ll experience many ups and downs, trials and triumphs.  Are you in-between a twa and 5 inches of hair?  Don’t worry.  Nothing a barette, clip, headband or scarf can’t make better.  Hang in there.
  3. Be Self-Supporting.  Realize that everyone is not going to agree with your choice to be natural.  Everyone includes hubby/significant other, family, friends, and even strangers.  Stay true to yourself.  Trust me, eventually what they think or say will matter less and less.
  4. Be Resourceful.  You don’t have to spend a lot of money on online products unless you want to.  The grocery store, CVS, vitamin shops, and your kitchen will have everything you need.  Braid shops,  barber shops, and hair salons use a lot of oils and shea butter based products.  They also get product discounts.  Ask them where they purchase their products, or if they can order products for you.

Here are a few pics from my hair journey.

Even after six years, I’m still learning.

Product Review: Hairveda Moist Condition 24/7

PRODUCTHairveda Moist Condition 24/7, 16 oz., $7.00.

PURCHASED AT:  Hairveda Online Shoppe

APPLICATION:  After rinsing hair with warm water, I applied handful of Moist Condition 24/7.  What I immediately noticed about this conditioner was how smooth my hair felt.  I usually get serious shrinkage with my conditioner washes, but not so with the Moist Condition 24/7.

This conditioner stretched my curls (see pics above) and allowed me to easily detangle with my fingers.  I kept conditioner in for about 20 minutes, then rinsed, leaving a little in.

RESULTS:   Hair was light and fluffy, not weighed down, but still defined.  No other proucts were added to my hair (see pics above).  Red highlighted hair is from previous henna.

VERDICT:  It’s a keeper.  I wear a wash-n-go daily and this conditioner will be added to my routine.  What I like the most about this conditioner is how smooth my hair felt and how it stretched my curls.  In addition to that, 16 oz. of conditioner for $7.00 is a steal.  I’m really impressed with Hairveda’s products and looking forward to purchasing more hair care products to review.

In my opinion, Hairveda is a great company.  The owner, BJ, is personable, approachable, and knowledgeable.  Hairveda’s products have good ingredients and deliver exactly what was promised.  Check out the Hairveda Online Shoppe for more info about the company and new products available.

Product Review: Hairveda Almond Glaze

PRODUCT:  Hairveda Almond Glaze

PURCHASED AT:  Hairveda’s New Online Shoppe

PRICE/WEIGHT:  $7.99 for 4 oz.

APPLICATION:  It has been hot and humid this past week, so last night I decided to do a light conditioning treatment.  I added olive oil and honey to 3 tablespoons of shea butter.  I covered my hair with a plastic bag, let it stay in about an hour, then fingercombed while rinsing out.  I used an Aquis microfiber towel to dry, covered my hair, and went to bed.  In the morning, I rinsed my hair, squeezed out excess water, and added the Hairveda Almond Glaze to my damp hair in sections.

RESULTS:  Oh. My. Goodness.  It has taken me all of six years to find a pomade with all natural ingredients that lays down my edges without irritation or itching, clumps my curls, and gives great shine.  The Hairveda Almond Glaze is an alternative to pomades or hair grease for those who’d like to avoid petroleum and mineral oil.  For me, it will also be replacing gels because of their glycerin content (which my hair doesn’t like).  This glaze contains sweet almond oil and castor oil.  It can be used to moisturize hair and scalp.  The Hairveda Almond Glaze has a pleasant light almond scent.

Here are a few pics of my hair with the Hairveda Almond Glaze:

As you can see, I got good curl formation and great shine.  My hair was soft to the touch with no resulting greasiness or stickness.  The Hairveda Almond Glaze also laid down my graying hairline like nobody’s business.

THE VERDICT:  I’ve finally found a pomade that fits in well with my low maintenance routine, and it has multipurpose abilities to boot.

  • This pomade laid down my graying edges without irritation and itching (which usually results in hair loss for me).  See blog post about Hairveda Vatika Frosting which helped regrow my hairline here.
  • The ingredients in this pomade are natural which allows the product to also be used as a scalp and hair moisturizer.
  • Due to its natural ingredients, it’s one of only a few products I can leave in overnight.
  • Produces great hair shine and softness without greasiness or stickiness.
  • Can be used on natural hair, curly hair, and permed hair.
